A Unanimous Decision
Around 1.3 million Britons live and work in Europe, with Spain’s sunny climes being the biggest draw for expats and France and Ireland also proving popular.
Britain has voted to leave the European Union (EU). However, there is uncertainty about when this will happen and how it will affect those who live, or have property or assets, in other countries.
Every country has different rules concerning taxation, probate and property. It takes an expert to advise on how to incorporate all of your assets, regardless of residence, within your Will.
Even as part of the EU there is no harmonisation of laws relating to death, Wills and estate administration across Europe.
For example, inheritance rules in Spain are radically different to those in the UK. Without a Will, the administration of your estate could be complicated, delayed and expensive not to mention distressing for those you leave behind.
So whilst as a country we may be divided about leaving the EU, one decision we should be unanimous on is taking advice on making a Will, or Wills, to cover all of our assets – home or abroad.
