This current age of austerity does not mean the taxman will go easy on you Ö
Last year, by challenging the Inheritance Tax valuations on the property of people who had died, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) was able to claim back nearly £90m. Yes, thatís ninety million pounds!
HMRC assessed more than 10,000 valuations in 2011 and gained an average of more than £27,000 in extra tax on each case.† The previous year they gained approximately £24,600 for each case.
It is widely acknowledged that HMRC are under pressure to maximise revenues.† They have stated challenging property valuations for Inheritance Tax purposes has always been part of their work.
Mark Giddens, partner at accountants UHY, said “for a bereaved family, it is unwelcome news to hear that HMRC wants to challenge your valuation of the estate and take even more of it in Inheritance Tax.”
We say Ö the taxman never stopped being serious about collecting every penny it felt it was due from you. Isnít it time you were just as serious about passing on as much of your wealth as possible to your loved ones too?
