We understand no-one wants to think about dying, we really do.† Unfortunately, no-one is immortal and for that reason we recommend, once over 18, everyone should make a Will.
A Will allows you to decide what happens to your assets when you pass away and also appoints guardians for your children if they are under 18 which is extremely important. Under a Will a person can decide who will be responsible for administering their estate too.
If a person passes away without making a Will the government decides who inherits their estate via ëthe Rules on Intestacyí and typically:
- † † † The surviving spouse or civil partner only receive a portion of the estate
- † † † Co-habiting / unmarried partners do not receive anything
- † † † The deceased persons estate takes a lot longer to administer than is necessary and can be more expensive
- † † † Any opportunities to reduce or avoid Inheritance Tax through exemptions, reliefs and Trusts are lost.
If you already have a Will, you should review it regularly to make sure it reflects any change in your circumstance.
