7 Reasons to make your Will

As the number of people infected with coronavirus continue to rise, now seems like an apt time to remind you to make your Will. Along with following the official advice to avoid catching (or spreading) COVID-19, you should make sure your affairs are in order too!

We’ve listed 7 reasons why now is as good a time as any to make your Will.

#1 A Will allows you to leave clear instructions about who will receive your estate on your death. Without one your estate is subject to the Rules of Intestacy (we call this the “government Will”!) and may not go to the people you would choose. NB spouses do not automatically inherit everything!

#2 Unmarried partners do not inherit AT ALL under the “government Will” and could instead be evicted from your home! Making a Will can avoid this.

#3 Should calamity strike, a Will lets you name guardians to look after your children under 18 years of age. You can also make financial arrangements for their benefit.

#4 A Will allows you to choose the most capable and trusted of people to administer your estate and carry out your wishes. This could be your spouse or partner, a professional or your best friend.

#5 Without a Will, your family could face a larger inheritance tax bill than necessary! A Will can minimise your liability to inheritance tax and keep the government away from your hard earned wealth.

#6 If you have remarried, a Will can ensure any children from your first marriage get a share of your estate. But that’s only if you want them too!

#7 The absence of a Will often leads to family disputes and relationship breakdown. Having a Will can prevent family disagreements. Trust us on this!

You shouldn’t need any more reasons than these to make your Will, but if you’re still in doubt, we’ve included a bonus!

#8 You should make your Will without delay, the peace of mind it brings is priceless!
